Artist Statement

My work explores death, rebirth, and the fusion of opposites. I draw inspiration from the chthonic and mythological as the rawest form of human understanding. Mortality and the ephemeral nature of life cannot be ignored and sometimes must be thrust in your face. We all twist ourselves into knots trying to forget and whistle by the graveyard. But by deny death and decay and the liminal interior world, we sever ourselves from transformation and liberation.

Ancient Egypt saw little distinction between life and death. Their holding of opposites in balance is a foundation for my art. Their rituals embraced mortality as a gateway, not an end

By blending cultures and symbols, I seek to pierce boundaries and yield to connection. My art merges the ancient and the contemporary—chaos and order to create a visual language that reflects our shared experience. Through patterns, hidden meanings, and ambiguous forms, I invite reflection on the paradox of the finite.

Death is not an end but a threshold. In the depths of the primal psyche, opposites unite, and ancient wisdom meets modern consciousness.

Biography

Nicholas Angel (b. 1970, Las Vegas, New Mexico, USA) works under the pseudonym Wretched Blasphemy and is a multidisciplinary artist based in Northern California. Working primarily across painting, printmaking, and calligraphy. Angel is best known for his evocative exploration of myth, history, and speculative fiction. His practice merges traditional art forms with the immersive storytelling of role-playing games, creating cryptic visual narratives that blur the boundaries between past and present, fact and fantasy.

Angel’s work is characterized by its rich symbolism, layered iconography, and references to ancient cosmology and ritual practices. His ongoing projects investigate themes of chaos, transformation, and communal survival, often incorporating mythological motifs and linguistic puzzles. Notable series include explorations of exiled religious cults, underground civilizations, and egalitarian societies rooted in pre-dynastic Egypt. Through his multidisciplinary approach, Angel challenges hierarchies and invites viewers to decode hidden meanings, fostering an experience that merges art, archaeology, and performance.
